Most people nowadays listen to their audiobooks and music on their phones. I usually do, too. But sometimes I don't want to use my phone. Maybe I'm going to be outside doing chores and don't want to risk breaking my phone. Maybe my battery is low and I'm trying to conserve power. Maybe I'm using my phone for something else and just want to multitask.

Just this past week I traveled from Oklahoma to Cozumel. I made sure that my phone battery was charged, but I also brought along this handy little doodad to help keep me occupied. It was a big help. The battery lasts quite a while and kept me entertained far longer than my phone's battery would have. I primarily listen to audiobooks, so I can't say much about the quality of the bass and other music tech stuff. But I can say that for what I use it for, the audio is great. I can use it with headphones or with the built-in speaker. If I use headphones, I can also listen to the radio with it.

Besides the obvious uses of an MP3 player, I can also use this to record voices, view photos, and watch movies. The voice recorder works. The audio is best when it is held about 6 inches from the source. Too close and it's staticky and too far away and you can barely hear it. I'm not sure that I would use the voice recording part, but I can see where it might be useful. As for viewing photos and videos, it is doable, but the screen is going to be so small it may not be enjoyable. I think I'd wait until I could charge my phone and just watch it there.

I'm so used to everything being touchscreen anymore that it was an annoyance to not be able to just touch the screen on this to make my choices. The navigation controls are rudimentary: arrows to move through the options, play to choose, a back arrow to go back, one more button for additional options while playing a track. The power button is a slider button on the bottom and there is a lock button so you don't accidentally jump tracks. And there is one other button on the side that I have yet to figure out.

The actual player is small, perfectly fits in my palm. For the tiny size, it does have some heft to it. The body feels like it is made of metal, so I'm sure that is going to help protect from damage, It does have a tiny hole so that you can hook a lanyard to it, but it didn't come with one. It also has space for a micro SD card so you can expand the onboard 8 gigs. There isn't a cover for the opening so dust and dirt would be able to get in that way.

Overall, I like the little thing. It's perfect for what I need it for and does have a few more features than I was expecting. If you want a standalone MP3 player, this would be great for you. If you are looking for a good voice recorder, I'd go elsewhere.
