Grill grates get nasty.  There.  I said it.  It is a simple fact.  Cleaning them is not a lot of fun, either.  Wire brushes are effective but can leave behind pieces that can cause injury.  I like this simple SANFEE stainless steel scraper.  It has 10 slots for both rounded and v-shaped grates (5 sizes for each shape), a bottle opener, and a hanging hole for an S-hook.  It is a heavy gauge metal that can stand up to some serious elbow grease.  At just over 4.5 inches long, it can travel easily to the campground, too.
