My take is that this has 3 types of uses: Creating stencils of existing shapes to mark cut lines on lumber, tile, etc, -Using the tool itself as a jig to position pieces for cutting or attachment, e.g., spacing balusters on a stair rail - Making and test-fitting shapes during design I haven't had it long enough to test durability, but it seems seems reasonably well made -- segments slide easily without too much slack and the etched/painted markings are easy to read. The turn knobs work great for tighening down the ruler to lock in the measurement. Glad I got the metal version vs the plastic version for reliablity.
Bottom-line: Excellent quality! So much sturdier/heavy duty than I expected. Adjustments are easy, locks into place with a quick twist of the nuts. The markings are highly visible and deep so they shouldn't wear away. Great deal on a great tool!
