Once camera tripods were only used by the professional or dedicated amateur photographers infact I'm old enough to remember when many households didn't even own a camera. So why do you need a tripod ? Well if you a using a camera using a high magnification / long lens or taking a photograph using a slow exposure time the camera has to be held very steadily to ensure the photograph isn't blurred by even the slightest movement of the camera. Also when using a video camera a tripod is invaluable in achieving professional looking videos which don't show the shakiness of hand held videos. So given the usefulness of tripods why don't more photo enthusiasts use them ? Well two reasons previously tripods being a niche product were expensive and they were also heavy meaning they were cumbersome to carry around.
This tripod by Zomei addresses both of these problems as it sells at a very reasonable price and because it is made from aluminium is also lightweight. but is it a good tripod ? I'm happy to say it is as it has all the features needed to take for still and video photography. The tripod measures from 50cms / 19.7inches retracted to 140cms / 55inches fully extended, the tubular telescopic legs each have 3 x flip locks which release up to 3 sections depending on the height required. The rubber foot on each leg is fixed on a ball-joint so that the tripod can stand steadily on uneven ground.
This tripod uses a quick release mounting plate which detaches from the tripod so you can screw it into the 1/4 inch screw thread on the base of the camera. This allows the camera to be quickly attached to the tripod and also quickly detached should you want to take some hand held shots with the camera. The tripod also has a built in spirit level so you can take the guesswork out of taking level photos and the pan and tilt function works quite smoothly and the head will flip from landscape to portrait as needed.
The Tripod comes in a cardboard box along with a zipped carrying bag for the tripod and a user manual I'd recommend this for anyone wanting to use this with a DSLR, bridge, compact or video cameras. It can also be used for heavy binoculars if they have a mounting screw thread.
