I've recently started playing around with the 5D painting kits. They are pretty fun and time-consuming enough that I'm not done with them in under an hour. But, with anything time consuming, you need a way to save your project until you want to work on it again. I know this mat is supposed to be for calligraphy, but it is absolutely perfect for my smaller 5D painting sets. I use it like a jigsaw puzzle mat - I just keep my painting on it and roll it up when I am not working on it. The mat comes with a pretty drawstring bag so I can keep my painting diamonds and tools in the bag so I have everything nice and neat.
The mat is nice and thick. It's not going to tear with just a few uses. And, being thick, it helps protect my canvas from being bent when in storage.
