With all of the Scouting activities we do, I am always looking for blankets and such to use for seating everyone. I used to do the big foldable outdoor picnic blankets, but these pocket blankets are so much easier to carry and take up so little room overall. I like to have a few smaller blankets like this on hand in the back of my car with the other Scouting items (first aid kit, American flag, hand sanitizer, hiking sticks, etc.).
This blanket is small and compact. It folds up in to a small pouch that is NOT attached, so take care not to lose it when you are out and about. The corners each have pockets to allow you to fill with sand or something else, as well as loops to anchor them down. You will have to pick up your own tent stakes to anchor with though, as those are not included with these. And the bag is too small to add tent stakes to. I try to keep a small bag of cheap tent stakes in the back of the car with everything else. You can pick up the small, cheaper metal tent stakes from the camping section at walmart for under a dollar. Tent stakes work great on moister ground, but you'll have a hard time anchoring your blanket if you are on hard packed ground or dry dirt. An extra mallet is another consideration for your Scout-kit in the trunk, but a pain to carry in your daypack due to the added weight.
I like the blanket, and the size is nice giving you plenty of room to spread out, to rig a waterproof cover, to hang up a windbreak, or to use for a poncho (which none of my other blankets are capable of doing!)… Great survival tool to have on hand and even better for letting kids get creative and come up with additional uses for!
I have added this pocket blanket to the stuff in the trunk and it is ready for service now! I love the size, the convenience of a pouch to fold it in to, and that it is waterproof.
