This light is completely self-contained. It is charged with built-in solar cells across top of the wedge-shaped light. It should be mounted where it gets sufficient sunlight to recharge the built-in rechargable batteries. It has five hi output LEDS on each side and 80 on the front. It can be set to light continually when the Sun goes down (either high or dimmed) or it can be set to light whenever it detects motion in the area. When in the motion detection mode, a few of the LED's are lit during standby and they all come on when it detects motion. We have a solar floodlight and it, too, shows a little light all the time at night, so I am guessing it has something to do with the motion detection circuit???
Nevertheless, this light can be mounted on any outdoor vertical surface, making sure the solar cells are on the top. It mounts with 2 screws and anchors if needed (included). During the day it is off and charging batteries, getting ready to light the night. It is very bright for a self-contained light and works very vell.
