The light strings are very soft silver wire that is easy to bend so you can place the strings around plants or anything you want. They are stated to work with AA batteries but I also use AAA batteries in the cases and the lights work just fine. There are two settings, flashing and solid, I prefer the solid as it is pretty but not distracting.
