Better than thawing meat on chopping board as it makes it easier. There were additional 3 chopping sheets that came as a present in the pack for fish, chicken and beef. 
 

the cutting surface (behind the defrosting surface) is very firm and robust. It's weighty but not so heavy thus making it easy to move around.
