There is nothing worse than having to cut the dog's nails, especially when you have large dogs like mine. Mine are very large - one being an English Mastiff who is over 160lbs, the other an Aussie/pit mix who is 65lbs. They both have thick nails that are very hard to cut. We typically end up using a grinder to file them down, but I thought maybe we might try a nail cutter instead and see if that makes it any faster, followed by the grinder to smooth them out.
The nail file is well made and durable. But it is not strong enough to cut through the large nails of my dogs. I think if we had smaller dogs it would work perfectly. But I have struggled to make it work with my dogs' nails. I just do not have the hand strength to cut through their thick nails.
They are simple in design. You insert the nail between the cutters, which is more of a round hole. Then squeeze the handles on the clippers and it closes and slices through the nails. Be careful you don't get too close to the kwik of the nails and cut them, too, because that is painful and bleeds horribly. I have done that in the past with my smaller dogs.
With my large and giant breed dog, this is not working. My husband even tried using them on their thick nails with no luck. It just won't cut through them. Luckily my giant breed tends to bite her own nails when they get too long, which is not the greatest, but works for her needs. And my large dog runs nonstop on the back cement constantly griding them down on his own. So we don't generally have to worry about their nails and need something like this.
I think if we ever get a smaller pet, this will work perfectly for us. But for the time being, it is going in the storage bin with the other pet supplies we have.
