We do a lot of cooking in our home, as well as a ton of holiday baking. Having an accurate thermometer is a must. I have 2 options in my drawer currently, but neither are the most convenient for us to use. I wanted something longer that would be safe to use for the kids, and this thermometer is perfect for my needs.
I love the design of this unit. It is smaller than my bulkier version, yet the probe folds in on itself leaving you with a compact item to store. It has a temperature guide on the thermometer to help you cook things to the correct temperature without having to look it up online. The probe is long, making it safe for my kids to use and helps keep our hands free from the heat. The read out is almost immediate and is back lit, so easy to read. It starts registering the temperature the minute it is inserted and quickly reaches the internal temperature (within 5 seconds average). Plus, it can read temps up to 500+, which is perfect for candy making! And what is even better? It can read the temperature to you out loud, so you don't even have to look at it! You can focus on your candy making or grilling without having to stop what you are doing to look at the thermometer you put in it. It does require you to push a button to read it out loud, but if you know where the button is, you can push it without looking while you continue to stir or move meat around. And if you DO want to look at it, the temperature read out stays on the screen for almost 10 minutes before shutting itself off to save the battery. You have plenty of time to check it out, but don't have to worry about turning it off or the battery running down if you forget or get distracted. It has a built in sensor that rotates the read out orienting it to the direction you are holding it. This allows you to use it in your left or your right hand and not have to read the numbers upside down or take it out and turn it around to look (loosing that true temperature read out once contact is broken). The large hole in the end also allows you to hang it from a hook if you have one handy, which we do. You can switch it from Celsius to Fahrenheit by long pressing the back light button for 3-5 seconds. It is powered by a 3V battery, which is already included and installed in your thermometer making it ready to use straight out of the box. And the battery is one you can easily pick up anywhere, not some special type you have to hunt around for or buy online only.
We had great success with this thermometer and I foresee it becoming our next go to item in the drawer when needing to cook. Well worth picking up, a great gift for those who cook or bake, and a great price.
Reminders:
Do not touch hot probe with bare hands.
Wash the metal probe in soapy water. Clean thermometer by hand. Do not completely immerse in water or put in dishwasher. It IS digital, and though it says it is waterproof, you don't want to risk messing it up.
The probe has a sharp tapered end – use caution.
