These fasteners are used extensively in American (and some imported) automobiles and trucks to fasten body panels, door panels, wheel-well panels, under-hood trim, etc. They need to be removed when performing maineance and repair to vehicles, such as removing panels to access electrical, hydraulic, fuel lines, etc. While it is possible to re-use the original fasteners, they just wear out after removing and reinstalling them, it is preferable to replace them with new fasteners. Being made of nylon, they are non-conductive. They are inserted into lined up mounting holes, then the center plunger is pushed into the fastener, causing the fastener to expand in the holes, holding the two parts firmly together.
These fasteners are also sometimes used in manufacturing of furniture to attach such things as drawer bottoms, upholstery, and other uses.
