I homeschool my daughter and I am always on the lookout for toys that also teach her while she is playing with them. This wooden counting toys does just that. The toy teaches colors, numbers, and basic math problems such as addition and subtraction. The set comes with a wooden storage box with number ledge, 5 wooden pegs, 35 colored wooden round discs, 20 wooden number tiles, 4 wooden symbol tiles and 6 double sided activity cards.
The box, pegs and tiles are all made from a soft, smooth wood which has been carefully sanded and finished so as to not create any splinters to the child. The colors and materials are all non-toxic. I did find that the pegs did not fit tightly into the pre-drilled holes so the peg would come out of the hole as my daughter was trying to remove the colored discs from the peg causing the discs to spill out onto the table. I plan to glue the pegs into the holes to make them more secure. This will cause it to not be as compact when storing but gluing the pegs in will make it less frustrating for my daughter while she plays with the toy. The pegs need to be a tiny bit larger or the holes should be a little smaller to make for a tighter fit.
My daughter liked using the discs to complete the pictures on the activity cards. We also used the toy during our math lessons for addition and subtraction problems. She also used it for helping with her independent worksheets and was able to do the problems on her own with the help of this toy. This toy helps to build and strengthen fine motor skills for children 36 months and up.
