Light up your action cam!

  We do a lot of outdoor activities we do, and lots of Scouting events. Having an action cam makes capturing memories so much easier than a traditional cameras. But we are a family on a limited budget most of the time (anyone in Scouting knows how expensive it can be when you have monthly campouts, events, and summer camps to pay for), so picking up a GoPro is not something we can do at this time. But we DO have a nice knockoff sports cam we have been using, and one of the challenges with our camera is shooting at night or in low light. I saw this cam light and thought it would help with those low light scenarios.   This light has 44 leds that light up bright and clear. It connects to your camera with a velcro strip. It has five settings you can use to determine the perfect brightness for your shooting. Since I do not have a GoPro, it doesn't fit exactly the way it is supposed to, but it definitely works for me and does what it is supposed to do. I did try it on the camera itself, without the case, and it does not work for that. I do have to use the case with it to get it to attach correctly, but that is fine because I want to be sure it is protected when using it, and having it in the housing is the best way to do that.   The light powers up via USB connection. My challenge is that there is no place for me to plug it in to the camera itself and use the camera's battery to power it up. I have to have some sort of external power source to use it. That means when I want to use it at night or in low light situations, I have to carry an extra power source to do so. It means I have to use a power bank, which is a bit of an inconvenience because it has to be carried, too, and then connected with the  usb cable. It is a bit of a pain when having the camera attached to you with a body strap because the only way to power it up is with the power bank in my pocket. My power bank is a bit bulky and heavy, which adds extra weight while carrying everything. But as long as I have the power bank there to help with powering it up, it works perfectly and does a great job of lighting things up more.   It also works great as an extra light source. It has come in handy a few times as a light to help me find something I dropped  at night and needed to find quickly. It can be used as a reading light or back up light if you can't find your flashlight. So it is helpful that way, if you have the ring light with you and a source to plug it in to. I tested it out in the car at night, plugging it in to the car's usb socket and looking under my seats. Worked great.   I definitely think this is a great attachment and add on to use with our action camera, but am not sure it is going to get used a lot while out on adventures simply because I do not want to be carrying the power source. If I can pick up a smaller, more lightweight power bank to carry with us in a pocket or in our daypacks, I think it would be more convenient and get used more. But with the external power being needed, I am not as convinced of the convenience.
