UCMDA Air Cooler, Personal Space USB Air Conditioner Portable, Mini Air Cooling Fan with Water Tank, 3 Speed 7 LED Lights for Home, Bedroom, Office, Travel
I have experienced the hottest Summer I can remember and there were times even with windows open and fans blowing I still found things uncomfortable. With this in mind and a limited budget available I decided to check out if there was anything that might be more effective at keeping me cool considering that climate change might be bringing us more heat waves.
Air conditioning seemed to be the logical answer but that is way too expensive for me and anyway I just wanted something to keep me cool and not the full home. So I decided to check out smaller portable air cooler units which use water evaporation to cool the air being blown by a 3 speed fan. I decided to try this air cooling fan from UCMDA as it was inexpensive, small and looked easy to use. It comes in a box along with a user manual and USB to micro USB cable. The unit measures 17.8 x 13.3 x 17 cms, weighs 0.68 kilos with an empty water tank which has has a 0.38 litre capacity.
The unit has a fixed handle making it easy to carry from room to room and because this is powered from USB it means that you can power it via a power bank so you cab use this air cooling fan anywhere. The method this unit uses for cooling the air is to use what they call a water absorption curtain made from a porous cloth like material. This curtain is then positioned so that the bottom of the material is in the water and then soaks up the water via capillary action so when the fan blows through the filter the water is constantly being evaporated which causes the air to cool. Well that's the theory but does it work in practice ?
I filled the water tank and waited several minutes for the filter to soak up some water, plugged in a power bank then switched the fan on I tested it alongside a similar sized mini fan and the air cooling fan certainly felt cooler and I think in the really hot weather it would be noticeably more effective especially if you used ice and water in the tank. Also for those who like that sort of thing this unit has a colour changing light function. you can either let the lights go through a continuous light change cycle or chose a single colour for the light. I opted not to use this function.
