The first I saw these types of trays it was on social media. I was impressed with how they were supposed to work. I can't tell you how many times I have forgotten to lay out meat early enough for it to fully defrost and had to resort to the microwave to defrost it in time, only to have some parts that began to cook. I thought maybe this tray might work, though I was skeptical.
When I got the tray I was a little surprised at how much smaller it is than I expected. The image on Amazon makes it seem bigger, but I guess the sizes of the steaks in it is deceptive, making it appear larger. But it is still large enough to put most of the meat I would be cooking for our family on it, so I thought we'd give it a try. There were no instructions or details included in the package - just the tray wrapped in a thin bubble wrap in a blank box with no branding or anything. I had to rely on the Amazon listing for any details.
It is a small rectangle tray with lines through it that create air pockets underneath your item you are thawing/defrosting. I don't know what it is made of, since the listing doesn't say, but it feels like some sort of metal, though it is lightweight. It does not plug in, does not need to be heated or have anything done to it - just put your item on it and let it do what it does. It wipes clean easily and is dishwasher safe, which is always appreciated in my home since apparently no one in my family understands that you CAN wash dishes by hand and then dry them off with a towel (that was a foreign thought for my 11 year old when I handed him a large bowl one day and asked him to dry it off, receiving a blank stare and then a bewildered "With what? How do I do that?").
I tested it out using ice cubes so that I could see how quickly it worked. I got six ice cubes from my freezer that were all relatively the same size and shape. I put three on a paper plate and then put the other three on the tray. And suffice it to say, I was shocked by what I saw. The minute the ice touched the tray it began to melt. I had very low expectations for this, extreme skepticism that it would work, and was blown away to see the ice instantly begin melting while the ice on the plate hadn't even started to look any different than when it had come out of the freezer. Within less than 3 minutes the ice on the tray was fully melted, while the ice on the plate still looked frosty and solid.
I admit I have not yet tried it with frozen meat, though. I still have skepticism about it working as they say it does (25-30 minutes instead of 65 minutes for beef), but DO believe it will cut down on the time some. How much, I can't say yet. I will be trying it out soon, though, hopefully. I haven't done any meals that have required meat that is frozen in my freezer since this arrived, so haven't had the opportunity to try it. But I am eager to see if it DOES work as well with meat as it has with ice.
Based upon my initial experiment with it, I would recommend it, but would also remind people not to be too hopeful in it working miracles. Will it help cut down overall time? Yes. Will it make those busy days where you forgot to lay out your meat thaw in a short amount of time so you can throw dinner on the stove? Doubtful.
