A prostate massager is shaped to reach and stimulate the prostate, a walnut-sized gland a couple of inches inside, toward the front of the body. The good ones do the angling for you, so it is less about effort and more about relaxing and picking the right shape. Here is how they work, how to choose between beginner and advanced models, and the picks our shoppers have reviewed.
How prostate massagers work
The prostate sits about 5-7 cm (2-3 in) inside, on the belly side. A prostate toy has a curved head that presses against it with a "come-hither" angle, while many also have a perineum arm that stimulates the prostate externally at the same time. Some are manual, some vibrate, and some rock or thrust on their own.
What to look for in a prostate massager
- Beginner vs advanced. Beginners want a slim, smoothly curved, body-safe silicone model. Larger or firmer toys and stronger motors are better once you know you enjoy it.
- The curve and head shape. The angle of the head is what actually finds the prostate, so this matters more than length.
- Perineum arm. An external arm adds a lot of sensation and helps keep the toy positioned.
- Flared base or handle (safety). Like any anal toy it must have a flared base or retrieval handle so it cannot be drawn in.
- Manual vs vibrating. Vibration is more intense and hands-free; manual gives you precise control.

Prep and safe use
Relax first and never rush. Use a generous amount of water-based lube (avoid silicone lube with silicone toys). Insert slowly until the curved head rests against the prostate, then let the toy or gentle movement do the work. Stop if anything hurts. Lying on your side with knees drawn up is an easy starting position.
Cleaning and care
Wash before and after every use with warm water and mild unscented soap or a toy cleaner. Body-safe silicone is non-porous and easy to keep hygienic. Do not fully submerge a toy that is not rated waterproof, and do not share without sterilising or a condom.
