A butt plug is one of the easiest ways into anal play, but it is also the toy where safety rules matter most. The single most important thing, before size, material or features, is the base. Get that right and the rest is about going slowly and using plenty of lube. Here is what to look for and the models our shoppers have reviewed.
Safety first: the flared base is non-negotiable
Anything inserted anally must have a flared base or a wide handle that is clearly bigger than the body of the plug. The rectum has no dead end, so a toy without a stopper can be drawn in and require a hospital visit to remove. Never use anything anally that does not have a true flared base, and never improvise.
What to look for in a butt plug
- A genuine flared base. Look for a wide, flat base or a T-bar handle, not just a slightly rounded end.
- Start small. Beginners should start with a slim plug and a tapered tip, then size up over weeks, not minutes.
- Defined neck. A narrow neck below the widest point helps the plug stay seated comfortably.
- Body-safe, non-porous material. Silicone, stainless steel or glass are easy to sanitize. Avoid porous jelly/PVC.
- Extras. Weighted, vibrating and tapered training-set options exist once you know what you like.

How to use a butt plug comfortably
The anus does not self-lubricate, so use a lot of lube, more than you think. Water-based lube is the safe all-rounder; if you choose silicone lube, do not pair it with a silicone toy. Relax, go slowly, and stop if anything is painful. Beginners often do best lying on their side.
Cleaning and care
Wash before and after every use with warm water and mild unscented soap or a toy cleaner. Non-porous silicone, steel and glass are the easiest to keep hygienic. Never share without sterilising or using a condom over the toy.
