We got little missie one of these doodle boards for her 2nd birthday and she has had a blast playing with it ever since. I decided to pick up another one for my nephew for Christmas and opted for this one, though the colors made me wonder if it was a bit too girlie for him. But we are going to see. I think he will have fun regardless of colors.
In this set you get the large magnetic board, a set of stickers, and additional magnetic shapes that are hidden on the back for easy access and storage. The age recommendation is 3 and over with a warning that there are small parts that might be swallowed, but there is nothing that I would consider small enough to swallow. Everything is attached, except the extra pieces on the back that snap in to place on the board. The pen that you use on the board is attached with a string, so you don't have to worry about losing it, and it is far too large to swallow.
The boards have different color zones, so all doodles and writing show up in multiple colors. There is a built in eraser on the bottom of the board that you slide across to erase your doodles. You simply swipe the thing back and forth across the bottom and it removes all doodles.
If you had an Etch-a-Sketch as a child, this is what it sort of reminds me of - but with color and without the knobs. You don't have to shake it to clear it and don't have the knobs to twist and turn. Instead you have a pen to write with and a slide eraser across the bottom.
As a previous teacher, I can see the educational value in a toy like this. It would be great for writing letters or numbers, writing sight words, doing math facts, etc. A teacher could use these the same way they do white boards and have kids write then hold them up to show. Or they would be a great addition to a center, allowing kids to practice during small groups or independent learning time.
I am so excited to see if Bubs responds to this the same way my little girlie has. She has loved hers and uses it all the time - so much so that if he doesn't like it, I can always get it back for her!
