A Great Beginner Set!

This wood carving kit is exactly what I hoped for when I ordered it. I wanted a small wood carving kit that had decent quality blades with a variety of tips so that I could experiment. This kit comes with 12 different tips. Each one comes with its own handle, so you don’t have to screw on new tips, you just grab another one and keep moving. The kit also comes with a plastic case to hold the 12 different wood carving tools where they all fit comfortably but not so tightly that it is difficult to get the tools out. The tips include several sizes of semi-circle, several sizes of triangle, angled edges, and a few other options as well. The listing on amazon shows you the name of each of the tips for your own knowledge.

Each tool is just under 6 inches in height and the bases are a good width to grip comfortably when you are working. The bases are solid wood and are fitted slightly for an easy grip between your fingers. The tips are steel and appear to be fairly durable, as well as appearing well designed for ease of use. The tips came sharpened, so be very careful when you pull them out for the first time as mine were packaged with tip up in the plastic case into of base up. I will say that I was a bit put out from a safety standpoint that they put the sharp tips without any individual covers on them.

This set also includes a whetstone for sharpening the tools once they require maintenance. One suggestion that I would make if you are getting this set for someone with no knowledge of blades would be to take the tip to teach them how to properly sharpen the tips so that they do not damage them or exert a lot of effort in sharpening them with no results.

I got this kit so that I could begin teaching a friend of the family a bit about woodcarving, although I am by no means an expert myself. This kit is definitely suitable for a beginner in the art; however, this set would probably not be the best set for an expert as the number of tip types is limited and some of them are a bit large for detail work. It is well-advertised as a beginner set and it is a reasonable price at $11.99 on Amazon. Overall, as a beginner set this definitely earns a 5 out of 5 stars.
