This is a decent press, it is cast iron, it is not flat but has ridges to add "grill marks" on what you are cooking. I washed it, placed it on a lit burner on a gas stove, allowed it to get pretty hot, then I carefully seasoned it, top and bottom with oil, rubbing it in and removing any excess before placing it back on the burner to finish seasoning.
It works great as a burger press, I have used it several times.
I do have one complaint, the handle.
The handle is rough, it almost feels like it's going to give me splinters. I wish it was smoother. I spoke to hubby about it and he suggested charring the handle with fire (not enough to actually catch it on fire), then using oil, I am thinking a bit of sandpaper might help. I do intend to oil it to help keep the wood grain from lifting up.
